Report of practical training

 

Since this year there exists a cooperation between the association Casa Calfelor, the advancement of the German Society e. V. and different trade schools in Sibiu.

 

Upon we had the first contact with apprentice in the summer 2008, as they were involved in different kind of works at the Casa Calfelor and in the demonstration workshop, we wanted to engross the cooperation to the apprentice from building-side trades and the joiners.

 

From the 3rd till the 14th of november the local joiner Daniela Greulich and the local carpenter Edmund Chmarsky organised the class of the joiners from the Grup Şcolar „Avram Iancu“ in Sibiu. With two teachers from the school and the professional Romanian - German translator Anda Ghazawi the number of 20 apprentice were teached in handling stationary machines, power tools, hand tools and how to mark and work with wood.

 

The apprentice are in the 3rd grade, but in most of their pratical lessons they have only worked with particle boards, rarely with solid wood.

 

Purpose of the lessons was to produce a small cabinet out of maple. The corner joints should be done in the dove tail tooth technique, the cabinet should have a mobil and an attached lower shelf and the back board should be rabbet. Content of the lesson was the intercession of the working steps, from strategy till the finished product:

 

·                     Drawings / to make the bill of materials

·                     Choice of wood

·                     Blank and processing to glue

·                     To glue

·                     Plane and finish measure processing to mark

·                     Mark and produce the joints

·                     Assemble the several pieces; if neccessary postprocessing

·                     Rabbet of the side plate + upper and lower pieces

·                     Blank of the lower shelfs to the finish measure

·                     Mark / processing of the drill holes for the attached lower shelf,  transfuse to the side parts of the cabinet

·                     Mark / processing of the holes for the mobil lower shelf

·                     Sanding of all interial surfaces and the two lower shelfs

·                     To glue the dove tailed tooth pieces and the attached lower shelf ( dowelled )

·                     Cut of the back board, fitting, if neccessary postprocessing

·                     Postprocessing of the corpus, sanding of overlaying tooth, sanding of the outside surface, watering, sanding, if neccessary repetition until the last sanding ( from 80 to 180 granularity)

·                     Varnishing or oiling of the cabinet, of the mobil lower shelf and the back board

·                     If varnished after the drying sanding and varnishing once more ( process in repetition 3 times )

·                     Initiation and fastening of the back board

 

Before we started to work we went through the detailed drawing, as the lower shelf ( the mobil one should stand back 1 centimeter ) or the rotating rabbet and we answered open questions.

 

After the first days, where we got to know the apprentice better, it arised who needs more attention and who is able to work self-dependent.

 

Apprentice who understood the working steps and went on with the work fast, they were also engaged to help their classmates in questions or working steps ( for example marking of the dove tailed tooth etc. ). A very positive aspect for us, if somebody has internalized the material and who is able to pass it in the professional way.

 

Daniela and i draw a positive summary after the first two weeks and we are looking forward to the further cooperation with the school, which should go on this year already. More weeks of pratical training are planned for next year.
